Heavy Rain is a hell of an experience. Its controversial control scheme actually works really well in allowing the fantastic story to dictate how events play out, and many of the game’s scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat. It starts slow and the presentation isn’t perfect, but the character development, dialog and story twists will hook you like few games can. Heavy Rain is not to be missed.

According to a demonstration given to Edge magazine, the game will use a unique control scheme.[14] A trigger button on the PlayStation 3 controller will move the character forward. It will take advantage of the button’s analogue function, allowing the user to control the speed of the character’s movement by pressing harder or softer on the button. The left analogue stick will control the movement of the character’s head and the direction the character moves in relation to where the character is looking. David Cage explains that this frees the movement of the character from the perspective of the camera. The rest of the game is played using a series of context sensitive actions such as picking up a bottle in a grocery store and hitting a robber on the head with it or pressing the “X” button to call the player character’s son, Jason, and quick time events, normally for chase and combat sequences. Players are able to bring up a selection of their character’s current thoughts by holding the L2 button and pressing corresponding buttons to say or do what they’re thinking. These thoughts will sometimes blur, and selecting them at the wrong time will affect the character’s reaction, causing them to say or do something in the wrong way.

Action sequences, such as when the player is being attacked, will be played out as quick time events. Players will be presented with various symbols, requiring them to either press buttons, move the right analogue stick in a certain way, or shake or tilt the controller. Failure to execute these commands take the story along a different path, and certain mistakes will lead to a character’s death. For example, in one scene, Norman Jayden is interrogating a suspect named Mad Jack when he starts to suffer from withdrawal symptoms and button prompts will show up. If he fails to take his drugs, he will be taken to a scenario in which he will have to escape from a car before it is thrown into a crusher, killing him. In scenes like these, a ‘timer’ scene (a portion of the screen that is devoted to show the player how long he or she has until their time runs out, or another event is scripted to occur, which is shown through several different camera angles) is shown at the bottom of the screen, indicating how long the player has to escape from his/her predicament. If a character dies, the game does not end, and play control switches to another character, with the events of the previous character’s death affecting the story. In the event that all four characters die, there is a proper conclusion to the story and the game ends.

Heavy Rain Game Unlockables: Alternate Endings
Below is the criteria for unlocking each of Heavy Rain’s endings. Each ending is tied to certain Trophies. Check out our Check out our Trophy Guide for a detailed description of how to attain each Trophy.

• Complete the ‘Perfect Crime’ Trophy. This unlocks ‘New Start’, ‘Dead Heroine’, ‘Uploaded’, and ‘Unpunished.’

• Load ‘Killer’s Place’ and succeed in finding the address of the warehouse on the laptop. Survive by hiding in the refrigerator. Successfully complete all following scenes through the ‘Old Warehouse’ act. Ethan saves Shaun, Madison warns Ethan of the cops and Jayden kills Shelby. This unlocks ‘New Life’, ‘Origami Grave’s’, and ‘Case Closed.’

• Load ‘Old Warehouse’ and fail with all characters. Do not have Madison warn Ethan, and let Shelby kill Jayden. This unlocks: ‘Ethan’s Grave’, ‘Heroine’, and ‘Unpunished.’

• Load ‘The Rat’ and fail the trial. Do not locate Shaun by failing the hangman. Have Jayden give up in ‘Solving the Puzzle.’ Let Madison die in ‘Killers Place.’ This unlocks ‘Origami Blues’ and ‘Smoking Mirror.’

• Load ‘Killer’s Place’ and have Madison escape, but do not use the laptop to find the address of the warehouse (you must wait in the secret room for about two minutes for Shelby to arrive). This unlocks ‘Tears in Rain.’

• Load ‘On the Loose’ and let Ethan get arrested the second time. Save Lauren from drowning during ‘Trapped.’ Have Jayden give up in ‘Solving the Puzzle.’ Have Madison escape ‘Killer’s Place’, but do not use the laptop to find the address of the warehouse. This unlocks ‘Helpless’, ‘Square One’, and ‘A Mother’s Revenge.’

• Load ‘Killer’s Place’ and successfully obtain the address from the laptop. Select to go to the warehouse ALONE. Have Madison save Shaun in ‘Old Warehouse’, and then survive the final chase over the roof with Shelby.” This unlocks ‘Innocent’, ‘Heroine’, and ‘Resignation.’

The action is smooth and exhilarating, thanks to sharp shooting and movement mechanics that allow you to be as quick and deadly as your skills permit. Environments are well designed and detailed, though many textures don’t look particularly good upon close inspection. Modern Warfare 2 isn’t a beautiful game, but it looks great in action. The diverse levels not only provide varied sights, but they are also cleverly designed to allow the action to flow at an exciting pace. Opportunities for cover and flanking present themselves naturally, allowing you to move through the battlefield in a variety of fluid ways. The aggressive enemy AI will keep you on your toes, and achieving your hard-earned success is satisfying.

Wait for a Splicer to trip an alarm, causing two security bots to show up. Start rolling the Research Camera on one bot while it’s killing the splicer and then shoot at it with one of the rapid fire weapons like the machine gun or the rivet gun. This should yield 600-800 research points per bot and there’s no risk involved. Note: The fire ammo for the shotgun incurs massive bonuses for research, so zapping a Splicer and then hitting it with a few rounds repeatedly can yield up to 1100 research points depending on which Splicer and which research tonics one is using.

BioShock 2 Hint: Hacking for Loot
When you hack a vending machine, stop the needle in the blue section for free ammo or a free eve. When you hack a health station with the same strategy to get a first-aid kit.

When security bots appear after an alarm is triggered, hack them and they will stick around and fight for you. You may want to stun them with an electric attack first.

When you fight a Rumbler — the Big Daddy with rockets — use telekinesis to grab the rockets it fires and turn them back towards it for an easy victory.

BioShock 2 Hint: Telekinesis for Free
You can use Telekinesis to pull normal items toward you without using any of your EVE reserve. Your EVE is only used up when you release the trigger and throw an item using Telekinesis. This means you can use Telekinesis to pull items like ammo and first aid kits toward you to grab without wasting any meter. However, if you grab an item that you’ve already maxed out, you’ll be stuck holding it with Telekinesis–or releasing the trigger to throw it and waste your meter.

To drop an item that you’re holding with Telekinesis, simply tap the reload button while still holding down the trigger. The item will be released from your hold without depleting your EVE supply.
